The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the Indian squad for the five-match T20 series against England. Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the captain, while Axar Patel will serve as the vice-captain. Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has made a return to the team after 14 months, following an ankle injury. The first match of the series will be played on January 22 in Kolkata.
Mohammed Shami’s Return and New Faces in the Squad
Mohammed Shami, who was sidelined due to an ankle injury after the 2023 ODI World Cup, is now making his comeback. Sharing the news on X, the BCCI confirmed Shami’s inclusion in the team. Selectors have named Dhruv Jurel as the second wicketkeeper, while Sanju Samson will take on the primary wicketkeeping duties. Young players like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Abhishek Sharma have also been given opportunities in the squad.

Players Rested for the Series
In a move to break the “star culture,” the BCCI has rested players like Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Siraj for this series. Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag were unable to secure spots due to injuries and poor performance. Ruturaj Gaikwad and KL Rahul, who have not been part of the T20 setup for a while, also missed out this time.
